About the artist
Early years
NEL LINSSEN (1935-2016) is a Dutch artist who explored the possibilities of paper for over thirty years. She created jewellery inspired by the rhythms and structures of the natural world, following an uncommon intuition. Often starting from an observation, she conducted empirical research to find the technical solution that allowed her to obtain the desired visual effect or movement.
Paper jewellery
Early on, paper became a tool for Nel to experiment with and a means of expression. Defying the idea that it is a fragile material, the artist has exploited its flexibility to make it the material of fluid, graphic and tactile constructions. His creations also demonstrate his eye for colour: chromatic combinations sometimes add an element of surprise or even visual depth to his creations, which are akin to kinetic art.
Exibitions
Each of Nel’s works has been conceived by her and made with her own hands. Recognised for her exceptional qualities, her work is included in many museums and collections, including
- Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris
- Cooper-Hewitt Museum, New York
- The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
- Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam
- Scottish Museum, Edinburgh
- Victoria & Albert Museum, London
